Let's handbuild beautiful birdbaths! We'll each make a full-sized birdbath for the garden. We'll handbuild our birdbaths in two parts--pedestal and basin--for easy lifting and storage (or you can choose to make two hanging baths, with no pedestal). We'll explore adding carving and sculptural elements and slab-building large. See this pinterest board for inspiration.
Expect some camp fires, snacks, and at least one song ;). This will be a fun week of exploring and making in community!
Bisque mold making: A couple weeks before camp, you're invited to join us to make your own large bisque mold for your birdbath basin. To prepare, be on the lookout for objects that would serve as good molds, based on what shape/size you are thinking of. Remember the mold is going to shrink about 12%, and then the piece itself is going to shrink the same amount. We'll share more information about this a couple of weeks out.
Glazing: We'll be using red iron oxide on the body of our birdbaths, and brushing glazes in the basin.
Membership Add-On Option: For those who would extra time to make your piece, we are offering a $50 membership add-on that gives you access to the shared studio from 6am-10pm for the week of camp + 3 additional days, through the end of the day Monday. This is a great way to have more time to work on the details of your birdbath! This add-on includes an additional half bag of clay. If you choose to make a second bird bath, additional firing rates may apply due to the size of the project and the amount of space required for firing.
