Give your favorite furry friend a bowl that’s as unique as they are! In this hands-on handbuilding class, you’ll create a personalized slow feeder bowl designed for your dog or cat.

You’ll learn the basics of handbuilding with clay as you shape your bowl and create raised sections inside to help slow down mealtime. Once your bowl is built, you’ll have the opportunity to personalize it with your pet’s name using underglaze. We’ll finish our pieces using Stroke & Coat glazes, giving your bowl a colorful, playful finish.

Whether your pet is a speed-eating champion or you just want to spoil them with something handmade, this class is the perfect opportunity to create a one-of-a-kind piece made just for them!

No previous clay experience is necessary, just bring your creativity and your pet’s name!

About the Instructor

Desirae Holsinger is a multidisciplinary artist with a BFA in Studio Art (2019), concentrating in Ceramics and minoring in Art Education. While she has explored polymer clay and stained glass, her current focus is primarily on ceramics, where she blends function with whimsy, grit, and storytelling. Desirae is the artist behind Stray Cat Studios, a brand known for its darkly playful, small-batch creations. Outside the studio, she brings her teaching skills to life by training coworkers on equipment and digital systems in a warehouse setting. She’s passionate about making art approachable, joyful, and just the right amount of strange.

Overview

Make your own set of treat plates (for you or your pet!), and support our local rescue animals. Proceeds will go to the RHSPCA, and thanks to a generous sponsor, all donations to RHSPCA are MATCHED in September, so your contribution is doubled!

In this fun, all-levels pottery class, we will make treat plates decorated with playful textures. These "press plates" use a technique that is quick to learn, and accessible to beginners and experienced clay-folks alike. Each participant will make 2-3 dishes.

You’ll choose your glaze for each piece, and the finished dishes will be available several weeks later at Friendly City Clay & Art Center for pick up.

About the Instructor

Ros O’Brien is an artist and studio potter who makes nature-inspired pottery from her home studio in Harrisonburg, VA. She works primarily with textured soft slabs, although her work sometimes incorporates thrown, pinched, or coiled components. Ros is endlessly curious, and has studied a diverse range of ceramic techniques with artists and potters around the globe, including Gail Kendall, Lauren Karle, Bill Griffith, and Ellen Shankin, and she was in the 2020 cohort of Naomi Clement’s Finding Your Voice Mentorship Program. Ros loves teaching, from beginner to advanced handbuilding. She loves to see people come together and learn about each other and themselves through clay, and enjoys the creative and unique ways her students come up with to use classic techniques. She is an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, and the owner of Friendly City Clay & Art Center in Harrisonburg, VA, where she teaches handbuilding.

Ever wanted to try your hand at the potter’s wheel, but not quite ready to dive into a 6 week class? Our Brunch and Bowls class offers a fun environment to dabble in this new hobby, while enjoying brunch-time refreshments. Sign up yourself and a partner, a friend, or a sibling to experience it together, or just gift it to yourself! Students will have time to practice making several pieces and then they will be able to keep one bowl of their choosing from the event. Friendly City Clay staff will fire and glaze it and your piece will be ready to pick up several weeks later.

Free brunch refreshments and snacks will be provided. Please let us know when you check out if you have any allergies!

We recommend trimming your nails beforehand. Working on the pottery wheel is a full-body experience—even down to your fingertips! If you’re not able to trim your nails in advance, no worries—accommodations can be made during class.

About the Instructor

Julie Beard Foster enjoys sharing her love of clay with others.  In fact, she believes time spent with clay is therapy for the soul. Julie wants to be a Glaze Fairy when she grows up since exploration of glaze combinations, surface textures and designs are a passion. She has experience with wheel throwing and handbuilding functional items at FCCAC and BRCC.

Enjoy an afternoon of playing with clay! In this class, LP or Julie will guide you through the process of throwing clay on the pottery wheel. No experience needed! 

Each participant will have time to practice making several pieces and then they will be able to choose their favorite piece to keep from the event. Our studio staff will glaze and fire the one chosen piece so that it will be ready for pick up in several weeks.

We recommend trimming your nails beforehand. Working on the pottery wheel is a full-body experience—even down to your fingertips! If you’re not able to trim your nails in advance, no worries—accommodations can be made during class.

About the Instructor

LP fell in love with the Friendly City when she studied art at JMU. In 2016, she earned a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics. She is a certified art teacher in Virginia and currently teaches in Harrisonburg City Public Schools, as well as teaching adult throwing at Friendly City Clay & Art Center. She loves exploring art with her students and seeing how her students express themselves through art. She is a mother, a baker, a ceramicist, an art teacher, and the woman behind LPMpottery.

Emily Rarity is a Virginia native and ceramic artist with a BFA in Ceramic Art from Alfred University (2019). Her work is influenced by early American pottery and is drawn to its simple, functional forms, which are inherently timeless. Emily believes that the pottery wheel is a magical place. The clay responds instantly to your hands, and every small touch makes a difference in your piece. She hopes her students will experience a sense of connection and joy with the clay as they create in the studio. She is excited to be a part of your pottery wheel journey.

In this fun, all-levels pottery class, we will make a handbuilt mug using just our hands and a few simple tools. We'll create our mugs from slabs of clay, adding texture and shape to give them plenty of personality.

Do you want to create beautiful and interesting paintings? Choosing a color is one of the first and most important decisions you’ll make, but can seem mysterious. In this one-day workshop, I’ll introduce you to basic color theory, the color wheel, and how to mix colors easily and strategically. You’ll create two color mixing charts that you can use for future reference. You’ll see the amazing variety of colors you can mix with just a few starting colors and a basic understanding of color theory. 

The aim of the class is to take the mystery out of mixing colors and help you mix confidently and joyously to create more complex and interesting paintings! This is a fun and interactive class and perfect for beginners.

About the Instructor

My name is Marydean, but everyone calls me Mary. I have been creating for my art business, Marydean Draws since 2013. I've taught art to children and adults in various classes over the last ten years along with online watercolor tutorials on my blog. I have been using watercolor and mixed media materials to create collection for prints in my shop and display at various local shows including the JMU Arboretum, The Lady Jane Shop, and The Church of the Incarnation. I usually paint florals, birds, and landscapes, with a focus on color and an interest in using watercolor, pastels, and papers in non-traditional ways.

Have you ever thought of making ceramic art to hang on the wall? Learn to make a 3 dimensional decorative wall hanging to easily add to any space in your home. New to clay or experienced potters welcome. Liv will guide you through construction of making a 5” x 5” three dimensional tile. Different styles of wall hangings will be shown or bring your own idea!

Pieces will be built during first half of class, then decorated with underglaze during the second half of class. Pieces will then be fired and glazed by the studio, and ready to pick up in 2-3 weeks.

About the Instructor

Liv Antonecchia is a graduate of the Virginia Commonwealth Fine Arts program in Craft and Material studies. She has been working from her home studio in Charleston SC for the past 20 years before moving to VA this past spring. Liv has been represented by several galleries in the south for her ceramic sculptures.

Join this workshop to explore collage and see if layering paper is your new creative outlet. With Chris's guidance, you will learn about collage assembly, design, and the mystery of collage papers. Chris will bring an assortment of collage papers- found, purchased, drawn, painted, and printed. You will watch short video tutorials and have one-on-one discussions with Chris as you work through this fun workshop. You will leave class with a wealth of knowledge, a couple of small collages of your own work, and hopefully a new passion.

About the Instructor

Chris is an abstract painter and collage artist living on a small homestead in Churchville, VA. A native of southern California, where she earned her academic credentials, she studied studio art and graphic design and worked in the corporate marketing world for 20 years as a graphic designer. She moved to Virginia, and worked another 8 years as a graphic artist in downtown Staunton. Today, her passion centers on making art, and teaching art. A committed process painter, Chris loves abstract visual stories: the shortest of stories; poetic one-liners that oft times defy curation. “I want to paint the poem.”

Come learn the basics of making wire wrapped jewelry! In addition to learning basic wire wrapping techniques, you will walk away from this class with two unique pairs of earrings that you created yourself. (Wire Wrapped Drop Earrings and Wire Shape Earrings) You will also receive paper copies of these projects to further hone your new wire wrapping skills at home. Clip-on earrings will be available as well.

No previous wire wrapping experience needed for this class!

About the Instructor:

Stephani Tusing grew up in the Richmond area, showing a love for arts and crafts at an early age. After receiving a bachelors and masters degree in history from James Madison University, she has lived in Harrisonburg until the present. Since 2010, Stephani has been the jewelry designer and business owner of Sparkling Creations Jewelry. She has received several jewelry making lessons from professionals as well as being self taught from books and online videos on developing new techniques. Her focus is on wire wrapping, enjoying the intricate nature of this technique and the infinite possibilities that can come from a simple piece of wire. Some of her favorite materials include semi precious gemstones, crystals, cane glass and copper wire. She feels privileged to have this creative gift and enjoys teaching others the joy of wire wrapping, leading many jewelry making programs as a Youth Services librarian at the Massanutten Regional Library.

Looking to add more interesting surfaces to your work? In this workshop, Steve will show you how to create and apply underglaze transfers to both wheel-thrown and handbuilt pieces. We'll experiment with designing original imagery as well as creating transfers using commercial stencils, then cut and arrange them to decorate your work.

Whether you prefer bold graphics, subtle patterns, or playful imagery, you'll leave with new techniques for creating surfaces that are uniquely your own.

Please bring two to three medium-sized leather-hard pieces to decorate.

One of the joys of childhood was playing in the mud. My friends and I made such master pieces, I am surprised they are not in a museum somewhere. In elementary school I had a wonderful art teacher who introduced me to clay. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. High School was the art studio. Lane Stanley was the best teacher I ever had. In my senior year, she invited me to show my work in her gallery. It was the first time (other than family) where I sold something. That piece for sure is in a museum. From there, having my hands in clay has been a life-long interest.

My passion for working in clay took off while I was a Studio Member of the South County Art Association. The opportunity to work and teach in a creative, supportive environment, surrounded by artists for me is the ideal.

I received my B.F.A. from Rhode Island College, and continued my study of sculpture in Italy at the Tuscan Renaissance Center. As a member of the South County Art Association in RI and now at City Clay, in Charlottesville, VA, I continue to explore the many forms and function of clay. Through teaching, I hope to share and ignite the same passion and excitement in my students that I have for the ceramic form.

In this fun handbuilding and surface design workshop, we'll practice handbuilding a colorful Irish Coffee Mug. We'll combine texture with stencils and colorful underglazes, then use darting to give the mugs a unique shape.

In the morning, we'll texture and decorate our slabs. Then in the afternoon, we'll create our pieces. Steve will walk you through every step, but there will be plenty of opportunities to get creative. At the end of the workshop, you'll have two mugs and the skills and inspiration to continue making more.

Come learn an accessible and delightfully tactile, grounding, and creative medium. During this workshop, you will learn the basics of round loom weaving. Kelsey will guide you through a sampling of stitches to create a textural, colorful piece of woven art while you work with a variety of natural fibers.

About the Instructor

Kelsey was born in New England, transplanted to Virginia, passed through EMU, made a home in Washington, DC, and is now thrilled to be settled in Harrisonburg with her husband, two kids, pets, and sourdough starter. She spent the bulk of her working life facilitating experiential learning for young adults, and has now experientially learned that she is a fiber artist!

No experience needed! Join Pam for this gorgeous skies watercolor class. During this session, you will explore the beauty of the atmosphere by creating four small paintings of different sky scenes. Have fun experimenting with color mixing and practicing the various brushstrokes required to bring these skies to life.

Class will have a limited number of spots so Pam can give you personal attention and instruction.

This is a great way to try watercolor, and a chance to treat yourself to an afternoon of creativity in a low-pressure way.

In this workshop, we will focus on drawing an adorable bluebird and planning a custom background for your piece. We will then use the watercolor palette to experiment with color mixing and practice brushstrokes to bring your painting to life.

The class size will be kept small to ensure personalized instruction and everyone will leave with one uniquely beautiful small painting.

This is a great way to try watercolor and a chance to treat yourself to an afternoon of creativity in a low-pressure way.

• IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT PREP AND MATERIALS: Participants must bring 3-5 pieces of bisque-fired pottery to the workshop made with RAKU CLAY (which we will provide). We will glaze together using RAKU GLAZES. Regular studio glazes won't work for this.

Enjoy an afternoon of RAKU FIRING… an ancient Japanese firing technique that features an extraction of red-hot ceramic items, pulled from the kiln at peak temperatures, and placed in a metal container with some sort of combustible material inside.

The smoke from the combustibles performs unique and individual acts on each and every piece. There is always an element of risk, surprise, failure, and volatility… and that is part of the experience, or thrill. Ceramics in general, and raku in particular, serve as the best analogy of the human journey. The ideation, then creation process, and ultimately into the state of permanence by firing. In the Japanese tradition, after each work is cooled, it is passed around to be held, talked-about, and appreciated for its beauty and unusual characteristics.

Each participant can bring 3-5 pieces of bisque-fired pottery (large mug size or smaller; no trays or plates please) to the session. Raku glazes will be provided. After brushing on glazes, works will be fired in an outside raku kiln. Note: pieces fired in raku will not be foodsafe.

About the Instructor:

Herb Weaver has been an artist and art educator for nearly four decades, first at the high school level and then over thirty years as a college professor. His area of expertise is ceramic sculpture having earned an MFA from JMU in Ceramics, and a BS in Art Education from EMU. He has participated in over 200 exhibitions, nationally and abroad, and recently transitioned to full-time art-making in his studio/home near Singers Glen, VA.

Let's handbuild a ceramic luminary with creative cut out window designs that shape the light. Julie will guide you through the process of creating a luminary with various geometric shapes designed to look like windows in buildings. You can create a house, barn, or stable. Underglazes will be used to highlight details. The studio will glaze your piece, and it will be ready for pick up within 2-4 weeks. A small votive candle creates the perfect glow. No experience needed.

About the Instructor

Julie Beard Foster is an educator first and foremost. Although she has taught in local public education systems and college settings with students of all abilities, her love of clay and American Sign Language surface as her primary dance partners. She has taught pottery classes and workshops at BRCC in the Workforce and Continuing Education Program. She enjoys wheel work and handbuilding functional items. Join us for an intergenerational clay class!

Learn to make beautiful winter-themed flat ornaments or gift tags with clay. This activity is designed for pairs: parent/child, grandparent/child, aunt/uncle, adult/adult. Individuals of all ability levels are welcome. Instruction will be in English and ASL if needed (please let us know when you check out if you would like ASL interpretation services).

The first half of class will be dedicated to rolling clay, cutting out designs, and smoothing edges. The second half will be devoted to glazing and decorating. Each 2 person team will make up to 6 ornaments/tags (approx. 2"x3"). Projects will be picked up at a later date (but in time for Christmas). Bring a friend and join the fun! Sign up today!

Learn how to make unique wire wrapped ornaments in this class just in time for the holidays! By the end of class, you will learn basic wire wrapping techniques to create two wire ornaments, a round frame ornament and a tree frame ornament. These techniques include making a wire frame and wire wrapped loop in addition to weaving beads inside that frame. In addition to learning these techniques, you will walk away from the class with paper copy tutorials of these projects to further hone your new wire wrapping skills at home.

No previous wire wrapping experience needed for this class!

About the Instructor:

Stephani Tusing grew up in the Richmond area, showing a love for arts and crafts at an early age. After receiving a bachelors and masters degree in history from James Madison University, she has lived in Harrisonburg until the present. Since 2010, Stephani has been the jewelry designer and business owner of Sparkling Creations Jewelry. She has received several jewelry making lessons from professionals as well as being self taught from books and online videos on developing new techniques. Her focus is on wire wrapping, enjoying the intricate nature of this technique and the infinite possibilities that can come from a simple piece of wire. Some of her favorite materials include semi precious gemstones, crystals, cane glass and copper wire. She feels privileged to have this creative gift and enjoys teaching others the joy of wire wrapping, leading many jewelry making programs as a Youth Services librarian at the Massanutten Regional Library.

Get creative with clay and fabric in this fun, hands-on class, offered in collaboration with Ragtime Fabrics! Grace your fall table with a reversible padded table runner, with colorful autumnal leaves on one side and calming verdant green on the other. Accent your beautiful runner with a handbuilt ceramic tray for your holiday goodies. No prior experience is required. Julie and Kathy will provide all the materials you need, including sewing machines, fabric, clay, and glazes.

Join us for a fun, low-pressure afternoon handbuilding a decorative Christmas tree for your hearth. Play with texture and carvings to make your tree your own. You'll choose your glaze in class, and finished trees will be ready to pick up by mid November.

She loves to work in a wide spectrum of mediums, her main mediums are photography, painting, and ceramics. She is largely influenced by abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, Williem de Kooning, and Wassily Kandinsky. Kathryn’s passion for art stems from her love of color, pattern, and texture and the movement and emotion that can be created.

Make a set of unique handbuilt bowls with Ros, no pottery wheel needed! In this low-pressure class, each bowl will be hand-formed using molds, rolling pins, and other simple tools. We'll add unique textures to the bottom, which will be left unglazed so you can see the beautiful red clay. For the inside, you'll have your choice of three beautiful colors.

Bowls will be fired and glazed by our team, and ready to pick up within 3-4 weeks.

About the Instructor:

Ros O’Brien is an artist and studio potter who makes nature-inspired pottery from her home studio in Harrisonburg, VA. She works primarily with textured soft slabs, although her work sometimes incorporates thrown, pinched, or coiled components. Ros is endlessly curious, and has studied a diverse range of ceramic techniques with artists and potters around the globe, including Gail Kendall, Lauren Karle, Bill Griffith, and Ellen Shankin, and she was in the 2020 cohort of Naomi Clement’s Finding Your Voice Mentorship Program. Ros loves teaching, from beginner to advanced handbuilding. She loves to see people come together and learn about each other and themselves through clay, and enjoys the creative and unique ways her students come up with to use classic techniques. She is an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, and the owner of Friendly City Clay & Art Center in Harrisonburg, VA, where she teaches handbuilding.

Celebrate the season by making your own holiday cards! In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn the basics of linocut printmaking while creating a beautiful holiday design.

We’ll cover how to transfer your design, safely carve a rubber block, roll ink, and hand-print your image onto quality cardstock. By the end of class, you’ll leave with a small set of handmade cards—perfect for gifting, thank-you notes, or spreading holiday cheer.

No prior experience is needed—you’ll receive step-by-step guidance throughout the process. Enjoy a relaxed, creative atmosphere and leave with new skills and your own custom-printed stationery.

Join us for a festive, hands-on workshop designed for children and adults to create together. Combining playful calligraphy, creative lettering, drawing, and card-making, this workshop encourages families to slow down, connect, and celebrate the holiday season through handmade Christmas cards.

Participants will learn simple calligraphy techniques that are accessible to all ages and skill levels. Through guided activities, families will create personalized Christmas cards, gift tags, and holiday decorations while exploring the joy of handmade.

The workshop focuses on creativity, collaboration, and fun rather than perfection, making it suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike.

Zenab’s brings a multi-script and multilingual perspective to her teaching of typography and graphic design at James Madison University. She holds an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK, and a Bachelor’s in Visual Communication Design from Swinburne University, Australia. An educator, typographer, graphic designer, and a letterpress aficionado. Zenab’s interests lie in the history of printing and book typography, particularly in bilingual contexts and traditional printing techniques using metal type. She is the founder of Sign Walks, a platform that critically explores urban signage through the lenses of history, language, and the evolving nature of cityscapes. She has presented her research and insights on typography both nationally and internationally.

Curious about alternative firing methods? Join nationally-recognized potter and educator Lisa Orr for this unique two-day workshop exploring the Rocket Kiln—a low-wood, low-emission firing system inspired by smokeless rocket stove technology, that can be built quickly and cheaply using mostly reclaimed materials. Lisa has spent years researching sustainable firing methods and teaches workshops around the country on innovative kiln design and atmospheric firing.

Bring bisque work made from cone 6 clay to be fired, and experience the process firsthand. Together, we'll assemble a rocket kiln built from a discarded electric kiln shell and a firing chamber made from reclaimed hard and soft firebrick. At the end of the first day, we’ll do a cone 6 oxidation firing. On the second day, we'll unload the kiln, and then fire the kiln to cone 6 with soda, giving participants the opportunity to see firsthand how soda vapor transforms the surface and character of their work.

Along the way, Lisa will demonstrate kiln construction, explain the principles behind rocket kiln design, and provide handouts detailing the brick layout used to build the firing chamber. You will leave with the knowledge and resources needed to build a rocket kiln of your own.

Ideal for intermediate and advanced potters, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to learn from one of today's leading ceramic artists while exploring sustainable kiln design, atmospheric firing, and the unique surfaces of soda-fired pottery. You'll leave with a deeper understanding of alternative firing methods, instructions for building your own kiln, and your own soda-fired work to study and enjoy. Work will be ready to unload & pick up the Monday after the workshop.

What to bring:

• Students should bring bisqueware (fired to cone 04-06), all made with cone 6 clay:

• Please glaze your work ahead of time, as time will be tight. We will have glazes available ahead of time for members of Friendly City Clay & Art Center.

Discover new ways to add texture, imagery, and narrative to your clay work in this hands-on workshop with visiting artist Lisa Orr. Drawing on techniques she uses in her own richly decorated pottery, Lisa will demonstrate how to create unique forms using bisque molds, both on the wheel and through handbuilding. No prior experience is required.

Participants will begin by using Lisa's molds to form and decorate pieces before learning how to create molds of their own, either on the wheel or at the handbuilding table. Along the way, Lisa will introduce low-relief sprigging, slip-trailing, and layering techniques that can add depth, detail, and personality to your work.

You'll also learn how to create original low-relief imagery using oil clay (plasticene, available at any hobby store), make simple molds for repeating designs, and apply those elements to leather-hard pottery. Lisa will demonstrate ways to use slip as a drawing tool, whether your style is whimsical, decorative, or narrative.

The workshop will conclude with a discussion of color, surface, and firing, including how Lisa achieves the rich jewel-tone surfaces for which her work is known through the layering of engobes, slips, and translucent alkaline glazes. While Lisa's work is typically low-fired, these ideas can be adapted to a wide range of clay bodies and firing temperatures. A recipe sheet will be provided.

This workshop will focus on forming and decorating techniques and will not include glazing or firing.

Learn how to build a travel mug! Create a unique travel mug using slab-building techniques. We'll decorate them with stamps and other textures, so each one turns out completely unique. Each person will make one mug, with or without a handle (your choice!). This class is great for beginner and intermediate skill levels.

In this beginner-friendly class, we will explore watercolor flowers and layering with chalk pastels for deeper value, texture, and highlights.

We’ll start with exploring flower shapes and drawing basics. Then we’ll work on mixing beautiful colors and laying down watercolor. We will finish by introducing chalk pastel for pops of color!

After first experimenting with the mediums, we’ll work on a final floral arrangement piece!

My name is Marydean, but everyone calls me Mary. I have been creating for my art business, Marydean Draws since 2013. I've taught art to children and adults in various classes over the last ten years along with online watercolor tutorials on my blog. I have been using watercolor and mixed media materials to create collection for prints in my shop and display at various local shows including the JMU Arboretum, The Lady Jane Shop, and The Church of the Incarnation. I usually paint florals, birds, and landscapes, with a focus on color and an interest in using watercolor, pastels, and papers in non-traditional ways.

Ever wanted to try your hand at the potter’s wheel, but not quite ready to dive into a 6 week class? Our Wine and Wheel nights offer a fun environment to dabble in this new hobby, while enjoying refreshments. Sign up yourself and a partner, a friend, or a sibling to experience it together, or just gift it to yourself! Students will have time to practice making several pieces. At the end of our time together, each participant will choose their one favorite creation to keep. Friendly City Clay staff will fire and glaze it so that your piece will be ready to pick up several weeks later.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided; however, you are welcome to bring your own drink and snack as well.

We recommend trimming your nails beforehand. Working on the pottery wheel is a full-body experience—even down to your fingertips! If you’re not able to trim your nails in advance, no worries—accommodations can be made during class.

Learn how to handbuild a decorative pumpkin, just in time for Fall! We'll use basic handbuilding techniques to create our own unique pumpkins--you choose the shape and give it personality. We'll choose our glazes in class, and your pumpkin will be ready to pick up by the start of Fall.
