Beginners and returners welcome!
Discover the timeless art of stone carving using simple hand tools—no experience needed!
In this class, Bethany will guide new students through the process of using the three basic carving tools, making a flat surface, and then carving a letter and low-relief sculptural design.
Returning students will carving their own 3-D sculpture with the stone from their first class or else purchase a new stone.
Moderate hand strength is helpful for this class, but the techniques are generally accessible to most people—no need to be a bodybuilder to enjoy the process.
This is a great introduction to a satisfying and meditative craft that you can pursue on your own with a few simple tools and for which there is an existing community that can provide guidance and support in your practice.
About the Instructor
Born and raised in Minnesota, Bethany Lee is a sculptor, working as a traditional stone carver in the DC and Blue Ridge Mountain areas. She enjoys teaching workshops and creating sculptures and lettering projects on commission.
Bethany holds a BA in sculpture (’03) from the University of Dallas, and she is a 2019 graduate from the drawing and painting program at the Florence Academy of Art (Jersey City location).
When not in the studio, Bethany can often be found entertaining her nieces and nephew, reading at a local coffee shop, or wandering around in the woods somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for.
