Continuing Slab-building for the Slightly Skilled, but Nervous, with Steve Palmer

$280.00

Overview

  • 8 Fridays 6-8:30pm, 7/11-9/5 (no class 8/1)

  • Ages 16 and up are welcome

  • Cost: $250 + $30 materials (all materials are included)

  • Experienced Beginners and returners welcome!

This 8-week slab building class is for beginners with some clay experience looking to tune their skills and take their work to the next level. We will focus on things for the family meal (at my table everyone is welcome). In the process of making, I will help each student improve their hand building with encouragement and helpful tips to improve their skills. I will include stamping and various surface design elements to bring their pieces to life.

This class is designed for anyone with a working knowledge of the basic techniques of creating a clay piece without step-by-step instructions.

About the Instructor

One of the joys of childhood was playing in the mud. My friends and I made such master pieces, I am surprised they are not in a museum somewhere. In elementary school I had a wonderful art teacher who introduced me to clay. It was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. High School was the art studio. Lane Stanley was the best teacher I ever had. In my senior year, she invited me to show my work in her gallery. It was the first time (other than family) where I sold something. That piece for sure is in a museum. From there, having my hands in clay has been a life-long interest.

My passion for working in clay took off while I was a Studio Member of the South County Art Association. The opportunity to work and teach in a creative, supportive environment, surrounded by artists for me is the ideal.

I received my B.F.A. from Rhode Island College, and continued my study of sculpture in Italy at the Tuscan Renaissance Center. As a member of the South County Art Association in RI and now at City Clay, in Charlottesville, VA, I continue to explore the many forms and function of clay. Through teaching, I hope to share and ignite the same passion and excitement in my students that I have for the ceramic form.

Class Cancellations and Absence

Refunds minus a $20 processing fee are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
