Stone Carving Animal Sculptures with Bethany Lee
Overview
5 Tuesdays 6-8pm, 5/5-6/2
Ages 16 and up are welcome
Cost: $330 + materials
$20-50 Materials will be collected by instructor during class (cost depends on size of stone)
Returning students may bring their stones back and continue to work on them and will not be charged for materials.
Beginners and returners welcome!
Learn to carve a simplified animal shape in stone! No experience necessary. Bethany will guide you through the process of using hand tools to sculpt a simplified animal shape out of a rough block of soapstone or limestone.
This is a great way to experience the physical, meditative process of stone carving and a fun way to wind down in the evening through a creative activity.
The class will take place outside and we’ll have a fire pit to keep us warm in the chilly evenings! The class is structured around 20min work sessions punctuated by 5 minute breaks. Students are encouraged to come a few minutes early and enjoy a cup of tea made over the fire before class.
Students should wear closed toes shoes and bring their own safety goggles if they have them. A head covering to keep off the chips is also recommended.
About the Instructor
Born and raised in Minnesota, Bethany Lee is a sculptor, working as a traditional stone carver in the DC and Blue Ridge Mountain areas. She enjoys teaching workshops and creating sculptures and lettering projects on commission.
Bethany holds a BA in sculpture (’03) from the University of Dallas, and she is a 2019 graduate from the drawing and painting program at the Florence Academy of Art (Jersey City location).
When not in the studio, Bethany can often be found entertaining her nieces and nephew, reading at a local coffee shop, or wandering around in the woods somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
