  • Cost: $250 + $35 materials (all materials are included)

  • Students should have experience with throwing on the pottery wheel, including centering at least 2.5 lbs. of clay, pulling up walls, and trimming.

Have you been dreaming of creating a teapot, a covered casserole for baking, a graceful pitcher, or perhaps something more whimsical like a garden totem or a gargoyle birdhouse? This class invites you to indulge that clay fantasy. With the theme “In the Garden,” projects such as teapots, pitchers, sculptural totems, and imaginative birdhouses fit perfectly—offering both functional and decorative possibilities.

Designed for experienced students who can confidently throw 2.5 pounds or more of clay, this course is ideal for those ready to take on a new challenge and work independently. Enrollment is limited to six participants, allowing for a focused, supportive environment. Each student will choose their own project and receive individualized guidance throughout, including thoughtful discussions about form, function, and creative expression in pottery.

This class will be limited to 6 students to have even more individualized attention from Karis.

What students are saying about this teacher:

“In the brief couple of Saturdays I have really come to appreciate not only Karis’ patient instruction, but the sense of community that permeates the building. Being among people who are so joyfully participating in the artistic process is uplifting. Everyone is so willingly helpful, it fills my heart!” -Chris and Beth

About the Instructor:

Karis has been making a living as a potter for over 40 years, selling at art fairs and through galleries. She took an adult education class in MA one winter and bought a pottery wheel before she could even throw a good pot, thinking it would be a hobby. After taking more classes at some museum schools in the Boston area, she bought a kiln and hasn't looked back.

When making her pottery her goals are to make something useful and to give visual pleasure. Her work has been influenced by living and traveling in Southeast Asia and Europe. But it is also influenced by her Norwegian ancestry which gives her an affinity for the clean Scandinavian sense of design in regard to form, as well as the Norwegian love of nature.

Class Cancellations and Absence

Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
