Cozy Clay - Independent Handbuilding Projects with Ros
Overview
6 Wednesdays, 6-8:15pm, 1/21-2/25
Ages 16 and up are welcome
Cost: $200 + $35 materials
Some experience with at least one of the following is recommended, although beginners with a courageous spirit are welcome: pinch, coil, slab, kurinuki
Looking to shake things up in your clay practice—or just beat the winter doldrums with some creative time for yourself? In this class, you’ll design and develop your own projects while exploring new forms and ideas, with guidance from your instructor and inspiration from your classmates. It’s a collaborative, hands-on space to challenge yourself creatively, stay inspired through the colder months, and discover what’s next for your work.
This session’s loose theme is “Cozy Clay”, with forms like teapots and candlestick holders as inspiration. You can stick with the theme or follow your own creative spark. We’ll also hold occasional “compassionate critiques”—gentle, constructive feedback sessions that help us grow as artists. You’re welcome to bring in past work for these discussions.
For this session, we’ll be collaborating with a wheel-throwing class, giving you the chance to learn from multiple teachers (LP will be teaching wheel) and even combine handbuilding and wheel-thrown elements if you choose. We’ll start each class together as a group, then branch off into our respective workspaces.
About the Instructor
Ros O’Brien is an artist and studio potter who makes nature-inspired pottery from her home studio in Harrisonburg, VA. She works primarily with textured soft slabs, although her work sometimes incorporates thrown, pinched, or coiled components. Ros is endlessly curious, and has studied a diverse range of ceramic techniques with artists and potters around the globe, including Gail Kendall, Lauren Karle, Bill Griffith, and Ellen Shankin, and she was in the 2020 cohort of Naomi Clement’s Finding Your Voice Mentorship Program. Ros loves teaching, from beginner to advanced handbuilding. She loves to see people come together and learn about each other and themselves through clay, and enjoys the creative and unique ways her students come up with to use classic techniques. She is an instructor at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina, and the owner of Friendly City Clay & Art Center in Harrisonburg, VA, where she teaches handbuilding.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
