This week-long adult summer camp is a fun, low-pressure way to learn wheel throwing without committing to a 6- or 8-week class. Perfect for absolute beginners or anyone looking for a refresher, with plenty of support for more experienced students as well. Julie will work with each participant to meet you where you are and help you grow.

Meeting every day for one week, this format helps you build skills quickly and retain what you learn, with consistent hands-on practice and daily guidance.

We’ll cover the essential techniques of wheel throwing, including wedging, centering, throwing, trimming, glazing, and decorating.

By the end of the class, you’ll have a collection of unique, functional pieces — and a solid foundation to keep going.

Membership Add-On Option: For those who would extra time to make your pieces, we are offering a $50 membership add-on that gives you access to the shared studio from 6am-10pm for the week of camp + 3 additional days, through the end of the day Monday. It also includes an additional half bag of clay, and firings for that clay.

What students are saying about this class

“I had the best time in my wheel class! It was so fun, welcoming, well paced, + a wonderful place for creative expression. Despite the class size, I still felt like I got as much 1:1 help as I needed to make sure I loved my pieces. I can't wait to come back!” - Shannon

“Friendly City Clay & Art Center is a beautiful space filled with natural light and friendly instructors. Come in and give yourself the gift of exploring something new. Better yet, come in with a friend!” - Tamara

“If you are thinking of taking a class - DO IT! Great Environment with so much creativity happening! Instructor was AMAZING with so many varied skill levels and so willing to help!” - Emily

Class Cancellations and Absence

Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. Instructors

Karis Barry has been making a living as a potter for over 40 years, selling at art fairs and through galleries. She took an adult education class in MA one winter and bought a pottery wheel before she could even throw a good pot, thinking it would be a hobby. After taking more classes at some museum schools in the Boston area, she bought a kiln and hasn't looked back.

She has exhibited her work in galleries and participated in craft shows throughout the US, but is now enjoying sharing her knowledge about throwing pots on a wheel... and getting inspired by her students.

LP Keller fell in love with the Friendly City when she studied art at JMU. In 2016, she earned a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in Ceramics. She is a certified art teacher in Virginia and used to teach art in Harrisonburg City Public Schools. She loves exploring art with her students and seeing how her students express themselves through clay. She is a mother, a baker, a ceramicist, an art teacher, and the woman behind LPMpottery.

Julie Beard Foster is an educator first and foremost. Although she has taught in local public education systems and college settings with students of all abilities, her love of clay and American Sign Language surface as her primary dance partners. She has taught pottery classes and workshops at BRCC in the Workforce and Continuing Education Program. She enjoys wheel work and handbuilding functional items. Exploration of glaze combinations and surface textures are a passion.

Malea G. earned her B.A. in Visual Arts from EMU in 2011 and later became certified to teach K-12 Art in Virginia. She loves creating her own art, but teaching art and seeing her students develop their own creativity, perseverance, and identity as artists has been even more fulfilling. She is currently teaching art to middle & high schoolers at Eastern Mennonite Schools.

Emily Rarity is a Virginia native and ceramic artist with a BFA in Ceramic Art from Alfred University (2019). Her work is influenced by early American pottery and is drawn to its simple, functional forms, which are inherently timeless. Emily believes that the pottery wheel is a magical place. The clay responds instantly to your hands, and every small touch makes a difference in your piece. She hopes her students will experience a sense of connection and joy with the clay as they create in the studio. She is excited to be a part of your pottery wheel journey.
