Stone Carving Hand-Lettered Signs with Bethany Lee
Overview
2 Saturdays, August 8 and 15, 9am-12pm
Much of this class will take place outdoors; rain date: August 22nd
You are welcome to stay for the afternoon session of "Beginning & Continuing Carving" on August 15th, if you would like more time to work on your project. Requires a separate registration.
Ages 16 and up are welcome
Cost: $150 + $25 materials (all materials are included)
Beginners and returners welcome!
Learn to carve your own hand-lettered sign in stone! Whether you’d like to create a personalized plaque for your home or business, an intention stone, a commemorative piece for a beloved friend or pet, or something entirely your own, Bethany will guide you through the process.
We’ll begin with calligraphy practice, using brush and paint to explore letterforms and experiment with layout and design. From there, you’ll translate your design into stone, carving your piece in soapstone or slate.
This class is roughly split between design and carving, giving you time to build confidence in both. No prior experience is necessary — beginners are very welcome. Bethany will help you shape a project that fits your skill level and can be completed within the class time.
About the Instructor
Born and raised in Minnesota, Bethany Lee is a sculptor, working as a traditional stone carver in the DC and Blue Ridge Mountain areas. She enjoys teaching workshops and creating sculptures and lettering projects on commission.
Bethany holds a BA in sculpture (’03) from the University of Dallas, and she is a 2019 graduate from the drawing and painting program at the Florence Academy of Art (Jersey City location).
When not in the studio, Bethany can often be found entertaining her nieces and nephew, reading at a local coffee shop, or wandering around in the woods somewhere in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
