Ceramic Surface Design Extravaganza with Beth Wiseman and Jane Angelhart

$165.00

Overview

  • Saturday, 4/25, 10am-4pm

  • Ages 16 and up are welcome

  • Cost: $150 + $15 materials

  • Beginners and returners welcome!

In this hands-on surface design class, students will explore a variety of techniques for illustrating ceramic forms and bringing imagery to life on clay. We’ll work with sgraffito, tinted slips and underglaze, mishima on porcelain, and watercolor-style painting on bisque ware, with plenty of demonstrations and guided practice along the way.

Rather than focusing on completing a single finished piece, this class is designed to build skills you can apply to your own work again and again. Students will experiment on provided tiles to test techniques, develop confidence, and learn how each process behaves on the surface. You’re also welcome to bring your own bisque or greenware pieces to work on during class.

We’ll cover practical strategies for getting an image onto a pot—whether that’s drawing directly on the surface, transferring imagery, or adapting reference images to curved forms. Students are encouraged to bring imagery they’re excited to work with, such as sketches, photos, or inspiration images. You do not need to be an experienced drawer or painter for this class, however!

This class is open to all levels, from beginners to experienced ceramic artists looking to expand their surface vocabulary. No prior surface design experience is required. Instruction will be supportive, approachable, and paced to meet students where they are, making this a welcoming environment for anyone curious about adding illustration and narrative to their pottery.

By the end of the class, students will leave with a stronger understanding of multiple surface techniques, samples to reference at home, and the confidence to continue exploring illustrated surfaces in their own ceramic practice.

About the Instructosr:

Jane Angelhart

Painting is my passion whether in watercolors or oils.  My training and career have been in painting, however I have always had my hands in other media. I owned and operated a stained glass studio where I designed and built church windows. I have had a small jewelry business, been a designer for a large ceramic studio, and directed the Andreeva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe. I have had a career in portrait painting for the last 20 years. I am a life long student of the arts studying at the Ryder Studio and Art Students League in NYC. In the past several years I have developed a line of ceramics to tickle my funny bone and satisfy my curiosity. I teach watercolor workshops around the country, judge art shows and teach mishima workshops. I have a painting studio and ceramic studio in my home in Charlottesville. I show my ceramics in, Crozet Artisan Depot, Shockoe Bottom Clay, Noon Whistle Pottery, Annie Gould Gallery, Earth Fire and Spirit, and Sophia Street Studios.

Beth Wiseman

Beth uses the surface of her pottery as a canvas where she creates visual narratives infused with playfulness and charm. Her work invites viewers to embrace the enchantment of animals and nature and to find delight in the marriage of dark clay and vivid colors. Beth is a full-time studio potter with over 12 years of professional experience, working primarily with wheel-thrown forms decorated using slip and sgraffito techniques. Her background includes a minor in Graphic Design from the University of Colorado, and she has shared her process through demonstrations and instruction at BRPG Clay College and the Virginia Clay Festival.

Class Cancellations and Absence

Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
