Have you ever wanted to paint but stopped yourself because you “can’t draw”? This class is made for you!
Tole Painting is a beautiful folk art style that uses pattern transfers—like a grown-up coloring book—so there’s no need to sketch or freehand. You’ll simply transfer the design to your surface and bring it to life with color, shading, and brushwork.
In this class, you’ll learn the fundamental brush strokes, blending techniques, and layering methods that make tole painting so distinctive. We’ll complete 4-5 unique projects (see photos) designed to build your confidence and skills step by step.
Whether you’re brand-new to painting or looking to try something fresh and relaxing, this class offers a friendly, supportive space to create, learn, and enjoy the art of tole painting. Come paint with us—you’ll be amazed at what you can create!
Note: each week, you’ll spend about an hour preparing your painting surface at home so you’re ready to dive into the creative fun in class.
About the Instructor:
“I can’t draw!” That’s what I used to say—my college art major roommate even laughed at my stick figures! Years later, when my husband was in dental school in San Francisco and our kids were little, I desperately needed a night out. A friend invited me to a Tole Painting class, and though I had no idea what it was, I decided to go along.
To my surprise, I discovered that you don’t need to know how to draw to paint beautifully. In Tole Painting, you simply transfer a pattern onto your surface—then bring it to life with brush strokes, layering, and blending. I was hooked from the very first class!
After moving here, I began teaching Tole Painting at Calico Crafts, where I taught for about 13 years. I also participated in the Waynesboro Apple Days Festival, winning Best Vendor one year. Over the years, I’ve loved creating pieces for my home, family, and friends—but what I enjoy most is teaching and sharing this wonderful, accessible art form with others.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
