Acting for the Creatively Curious with Steve Gilman
Overview
6 Thursdays, 4/16-5/21, 6-8pm
Ages 18 and up are welcome
Cost: $145
Beginners and returners welcome!
This class is an invitation to explore creativity through acting, in a safe and supportive environment. The class will focus primarily on presence, listening, and honest expression.
Using acting exercises, simple partner work and short scenes or monologues, students will learn how to be more present, responsive and expressive in a supportive, low-pressure environment.
The focus is on fostering curiosity, empathy and connection through acting and performance techniques.
This class is designed for artists, actors or anyone interested working to expand their creative range, build confidence and reconnect with their natural expressive instincts.
No experience is required—just openness and a willingness to explore.
About the Instructor
Steve Gilman studied Theater with a concentration in Directing at James Madison University and later taught acting and advanced performance techniques as an adjunct instructor.
Over the years, he has directed numerous productions, including One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Of Mice and Men, Picasso at the Lapin Agile, and Twelve Angry Men along with many other community and regional works. He also taught community acting classes through the Valley Playhouse, helping students of all experience levels discover their voice and presence on stage.
Steve directed the improv group Cillia and performed with Nickels and Weiner Improv Comedy, experiences that deepened his belief that great acting begins with listening, trust, and the commitment to respond honestly in the moment.
His teaching is influenced by both Stella Adler and Sanford Meisner, emphasizing imagination, truthful behavior, and being fully present. In class, he creates a welcoming, supportive environment where beginners and more experienced performers alike can explore creativity, emotional awareness, and expressive freedom — not just to “perform,” but to connect more deeply with themselves and others.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
