Building your Watercolor Skills: Color, Value, and Texture with Marydean Hairston
Overview
3 Tuesdays, 6-8pm, 5/5-5/19
Ages 16 and up are welcome
Cost: $110 + $20 materials
Recommended (but not required) for those who have completed the Introduction to Watercolor class
In these classes, we will focus on building the skills that will help you create more complex, layered, and varied watercolor compositions. Each class will start with a time of experimentation and end with a project that puts those new skills to use!
Class 1 will focus on creating the beautiful watercolor washes that are so useful when painting a background, a sky, or a landscape. We will experiment with using layers of watercolor to create deeper and more interesting colors.
Class 2 will be all about creating value in our paintings. We will look at how different artists create areas of light and dark and experiment with a variety of ways this can be done with watercolor.
Class 3 will be about creating texture. We’ll experiment with a variety of ways to create texture in your watercolor paintings, including layering with pencil, using a dry brush, and layering with other media. We’ll end with a beautiful landscape project."
What students are saying about this teacher:
"Mary was so prepared. She brought worksheet activities that enhanced our learning (e.g, color theory and mixing). She had a great balance of instructions and freedom to explore independently.”
About the Instructor
My name is Marydean, but everyone calls me Mary. I have been creating for my art business, Marydean Draws since 2013. I've taught art to children and adults in various classes over the last ten years along with online watercolor tutorials on my blog. I have been using watercolor and mixed media materials to create collection for prints in my shop and display at various local shows including the JMU Arboretum, The Lady Jane Shop, and The Church of the Incarnation. I usually paint florals, birds, and landscapes, with a focus on color and an interest in using watercolor, pastels, and papers in non-traditional ways.
Class Cancellations and Absence
Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
