Building your Watercolor Skills: Experiments in Learning to Play with Marydean Hairston

$130.00

Overview

  • 3 Wednesdays 10am-12pm, 11/18-12/2

  • Ages 16 and up are welcome

  • Cost: $110 + $20 materials (all materials are included)

  • Recommended (but not required) for those who have completed the Introduction to Watercolor class or the Color Mixing Workshop, or have some background in watercolor.

What if there were more than one way to use watercolors? What if the process of painting was loose, free, and playful? What if you could paint from your heart?

In this skill-building class, we’ll play with techniques that blur the lines between watercolor and other media. We’ll try a variety of techniques to create organic textures and patterns. We’ll experiment with layering watercolor with pastels and pencil, and play with different ways of putting paint on the paper.

We’ll talk about choosing a color palette and look at famous playful paintings for inspiration. Most of all, we’ll make space for your inner artist to experience the joy of creating.

What students are saying about this teacher:

"Thank you for offering a class for watercolor painters that leans into various brush and color blending techniques. I walked away from the class with new skills and feeling comfortable experimenting with color blending, water and pigment control, and using various materials other than brushes to create dimension in painting. Mary helps students of all skill levels feel confident and creates an inviting space for students to interact.

About the Instructor

My name is Marydean, but everyone calls me Mary. I have been creating for my art business, Marydean Draws since 2013. I've taught art to children and adults in various classes over the last ten years along with online watercolor tutorials on my blog. I have been using watercolor and mixed media materials to create collection for prints in my shop and display at various local shows including the JMU Arboretum, The Lady Jane Shop, and The Church of the Incarnation. I usually paint florals, birds, and landscapes, with a focus on color and an interest in using watercolor, pastels, and papers in non-traditional ways.

Class Cancellations and Absence

Refunds minus a 10% or $20 processing fee (whichever is lower) are offered until 14 days before the start of class. After that, we do not offer refunds. We don’t offer refunds for missed classes, so please be sure you can attend all sessions of a class, or that you are okay with missing any that you’ll be away for. You can find out more on our studio policies page.
