Coil pottery is one of the oldest techniques used to create vessels and sculptural pieces of work where the size of the kiln is the only limitation. This workshop is suitable for beginners or any potter who wants to try a new building technique that might be the means by which to stretch one’s creative potential. The first class will use student collected photographs or drawings of natural forms for inspiration. All plants from trees to toadstools, rocks, legs, leaves, fish or fowl that can inform all aspects of clay work.
The class will begin with discussion and fine tuning of designs on paper that have been created prior to the workshop. These will guide shape, form and size. Students are advised to build to a minimum of 10” in at least one dimension and there will be discussion about aesthetics, practicalities and pitfalls. As the work develops, consideration of surface design will be given attention and potential for decorative treatment as reflected in the source material .
By end of Day 3, the sculptural building process will be complete and the final form and shape will be fixed. The work will be set aside to completely dry and then be referred to as greenware.
Day 4 (surface treatment with glaze etc.) The goal of this final session is to embellish and apply superficial color and surface patterns as needed prior to final firing.
About the Instructor
Janly Jaggard is a British artist who has lived Staunton since the early 90's. She was educated in England with a B.A. in Ceramics in 1971 and then a M.A. In Fine Art-Painting 2015. These days Janly mainly focuses on abstract painting or vitreous enamel work, with clay never far away in a studio. Her clay work relates to hand building with sculptural tendencies. Teaching has been an important aspect of Janly's practice since early collage days, finding that the interaction with students is enriching and informative.
