New to clay? Or ready to take your slab-building skills to the next level? In this beginner-friendly hand building class, you'll discover how working with templates and molds can open up a whole new world of possibilities! Together, we'll learn how to create beautifully shaped, functional ceramic pieces with confidence and creativity.
Throughout the course, you'll learn the fundamentals of slab construction while exploring techniques for draping, pressing, shaping, joining, and refining your work using molds and templates. You'll see how molds and templates can help create consistent forms while still leaving plenty of room to add your own texture, surface design with underglaze, and personal style. From plates and bowls to casserole dishes, you'll leave with projects you'll be proud to use and display.
Whether you're new to clay or looking to expand your handbuilding skills, this class offers a fun and approachable way to create unique ceramic work while learning techniques you'll use again and again.
Already taken Starting with Slabs: Foundations of Slab Building? This class is the perfect next step! Build on the skills you learned in the first course as you explore a new approach to slab building using molds. While prior experience isn't required, students from the first class will find this to be a natural and exciting progression of their handbuilding journey.
If you're simply looking to expand your slab-building knowledge and add new techniques to your creative toolbox, you're welcome here too! Whether you're continuing your clay journey or joining us for the first time, this class offers plenty of opportunities to grow your skills, explore new methods, and create beautiful handmade pottery.
About the Instructor
Desirae Holsinger is a multidisciplinary artist with a BFA in Studio Art (2019), concentrating in Ceramics and minoring in Art Education. While she has explored polymer clay and stained glass, her current focus is primarily on ceramics, where she blends function with whimsy, grit, and storytelling. Desirae is the artist behind Stray Cat Studios, a brand known for its darkly playful, small-batch creations. Outside the studio, she brings her teaching skills to life by training coworkers on equipment and digital systems in a warehouse setting. She’s passionate about making art approachable, joyful, and just the right amount of strange.
